ALT Linux
About
ALT Linux is a free and open-source, RPM-based, APT-managed operating system originating from Russia, built upon the Linux kernel and the Sisyphus package repository. Its product portfolio includes various distributions and notably, ALT Linux Rescue, a dedicated disaster recovery tool. This LiveCD is designed to be 'evergreen,' receiving incremental configuration and software upgrades, with new builds automatically generated each Wednesday. Primarily GUI-less, it intentionally serves users proficient with CLI tools for tasks like system administration, diagnostics, and data recovery, though a GUI version is under consideration. Key features encompass NTFS Partition Recovery, X86/x64 Compatibility, UEFI Support, Rescue CD capabilities, and Network Tools, with a forensic mode added in May 2014 to aid in analysis, secure-boot, data wiping, and partition cloning. As a community-driven, open-source project, it operates without a traditional leadership structure, employee count, or direct revenue model. It maintains a presence on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. User feedback notes occasional slowness in package updates, while maintainers highlight its continuous development and specialized CLI focus for rescue and diagnostic operations.
